Becoming a Patient

Taking the First Step Is Easier Than You Think

While North Dakota doesn’t allow marijuana for recreational use, the state recognizes the significant potential it has as a medicinal option. The Medical Marijuana Program ensures patients have safe, controlled access to high-quality marijuana products through carefully regulated dispensaries.

If the idea of applying for a medical card feels overwhelming, don’t worry—it’s simpler than you might think. We’re here to walk you through the 4-step application process and explain what comes next after you’re approved. If you’re ready to explore the benefits of medical marijuana, just follow these easy steps to get started on your journey.

1. Get Certified by Your Healthcare Provider

Your healthcare provider needs to complete and sign the North Dakota Medical Marijuana Certification form, a key step in applying for your medical card. If your current provider isn’t comfortable with this, you can easily find a welcoming provider on our Providers page.

2. Create an Account on the ND Medical Marijuana Portal

Next, head over to the North Dakota Medical Marijuana Program website and either create a new account or log into your existing one. Make sure to use an active email address and enter accurate personal details to keep everything moving smoothly.

3. Complete Your Application Online

Filling out the application is simple and straightforward. Just log in to the portal and start. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A recent, clear-color photo in JPEG or PNG format with a plain background. Be sure your face is fully visible—no tilting, filters, or head coverings (keep eyes open and avoid tinted glasses).
  • A copy of your ND state-issued driver’s license or non-driver ID in JPEG, PNG, or PDF format. If you’re under 19, a birth certificate is required instead of an ID.
  • Your healthcare provider’s name and email, who has completed your written certification.
  • Minors will also need to upload their birth certificate (instead of an ID) and a copy of their parent or guardian’s ID.

4. Pay the Non-Refundable $25 Application Fee Online

After the Application

1. Monitor Your Application Status

The processing time for applications typically takes 7-10 business days. Be sure to check your application status regularly, as you won’t receive an email notification

2. Receive Your Medical Marijuana Card

Once your application is approved, your medical marijuana card will be mailed to you. You can access your card sooner by logging into the portal and downloading or printing it.

3. Visit Your Local Medical Marijuana Dispensary

Once you have your card, visit a dispensary to determine which products are best suited to your needs. You can find the full list of licensed dispensaries on the North Dakota Health & Human Services website or visit our Dispensaries page.

*On your first visit, be sure to bring both your medical marijuana card and a valid photo ID.

Keep in Mind

Your medical marijuana card is only valid for up to one year and has to be renewed annually.
